Camphor House

Tucked away on a sloping site in a verdant crescent, the property comprised an old facebrick house split over three levels, opening onto a north-facing private garden. A magnificent camphor tree contains the garden edge against which the house is set. The work entailed an extensive remodelling of the house to function as the long-term home for a young family. Aspects of scale, massing and privacy are addressed in the purposeful formation of openings in the walls and through the layering, screening and texture of elements. Two chimneys flank the main façade of the house seen from the garden. From exterior to interior, the white-painted bagged brick, charcoal and oak palette of the house is consistently quiet, controlled and timeless.
